This book is one that is fun to read together as a small group or to quietly study by yourself. It is a Where's Wally style book where you are looking for a kiwi and four of his friends on every page. I explained to my girls (4.5 and 6 years) what we were searching for and they were keen to get going. On the first couple of pages I was the one the found the characters but Miss 6 soon got the idea and had found one or two before I had finished reading the short rhyme. Miss 4.5 didn't find very many of the characters by herself but she had a good laugh at the things that were happening in the scenes.

This is definitely a New Zealand book. Each scene is somewhere iconic from the Rugby 7s, Waitomo Caves, or Rotorua. There are a total of ten scenes. There are also things to find particular to each scene. We didn't realise until we had finished reading the book as the list is a the back. It would have been good to have the list on the page it pertained to or on a flip out page, so we didn't have to keep flicking back to it.

This book would be great for a waiting room or coffee table book as it is just as entertaining for adults and older children as it was for my girls. It is also the ideal as you can do the whole book or just a page or too. The kiwi flavour makes it great as a gift or souvenir for those from overseas. $21 for a big hardcover book is exceptional value.

This book immediately appeals right from the glossy hard back cover. The sign immediately had me thinking of all the times I have been driving a long the road and seen the Kiwi sign and wondered if anyone ever sees the kiwi.

My Miss three and her big sisters have spent hours with this book trying to find all the different objects in the pictures or just looking at all the illustration's which are so incredibly well thought out and done. There are ore than 800 objects to spot but it is easy to get distracted and just look at the pictures. Each double page is of a different New Zealand scene and there has been great attention to detail in all the different little scenes depicted within the page. This is a fantastic book to give to someone overseas who is perhaps a little homesick as it really does have so many iconic scenes in it. On the final page there is a checklist of all the items that you can find on each page. There are definitely enough to keep you busy for hours.

With Christmas coming up I can definitely recommend this as a winning present that will keep your little ones and, probably you as well, amused for hours over the summer. This book is definitely fantastic value for money.

Product image for Journeys in the Dead Season"So little natural light falls into my cell, and I have such a limited view from my window, that at times I feel as though I am entombed within a coffin... Down here, deep within the soil, I must content myself with mental excursions only, tripping beneath the canopies of forests that exist solely in the mind..."
