Planet of the Dead sees the return of David Tennant as the Doctor on an adventure without any companions.

We join the story as a master burglar steals from the London Museum and escapes by jumping on a double decker bus where she is soon joined by the Doctor who is tracking down a wormhole. Before anyone knows it the bus is transported onto an alien planet and U.N.I.T. is called onto the scene to try and figure things out. It's interesting to read that they actually filmed in Dubai, so the sand and scenery is real, and upon the bus getting damaged on route to Dubai they worked the damage into the show.

It was funny to see the over eagerness and hero worship of Malcolm towards the Doctor and Christina could have been a great companion to the Doctor but it wasn't meant to be and thinking about the long run she wouldn't have been a perfect companion to this Doctor and it would have been a bit too quick a change for her with the oncoming regeneration. The fly hybrid aliens were rather funky and it was neat how they are essentially the same as our household flys, just bigger and humanoid.

A fun episode for the series.

I must admit that I was over tired when watching this and found that I did miss a bit out of the story but I think I managed to follow most of it. It was good to see how the Doctor managed to use a phone and call to another dimension and never gave it another thought as to what happens if the call can't be connected.

The characters were good, we saw how the Doctor manages to talk to the local aliens without any problems (he explains it by the TARDIS translating the language for him) and how he comomunicated with flys (well that is what they looked like, not sure what the flys sound like but with a bit of imagination then they might sound like they did in this episode). The limited imaginations of the humans (they thought that they could just beat the enemies with guns and heaps of bullets) is showing, they accept that the Doctor can fly through time and space and that he is able to do amazing things but then their response to a threat is to have heaps of guys with guns waiting.

As usual the special effects were great, it really looked like the bus was flying, not sure why exactly he helped Lady Christina escape but I'm sure there would have been a reason. I'm sure that I'm going to be enjoying the future episodes if this is what I can expect.
