Horrible Histories - Series 5 product reviews

Based on the bestselling books for children (and for adults, but they just won't admit it), Horrible Histories is an energetic, surprising and unconventional take on history's most gruesome, unpleasant and funny moments. From the Woeful Second World War, Frightful First World War, Measly Middle Ages and Savage Stone Age to the Groovy Greeks, Rotten Romans, Vicious Vikings and Awful Egyptians, history has never been so horrible.

These are the stories from history that your mischievous uncle told you about: the gory, smelly bits that your teacher wouldn't approve of. Get ready for the funniest, fastest, nastiest and daftest ride through history you're ever likely to see.

SPECIAL FEATURES: Quiz Questions, Savage Songs, Deleted Scenes ('More Stuff We Couldn't Fit In') and 'Bloopers'

My children, especially my tweenage boys, have always been huge fans of the Horrible Histories books, and because of them I too have grown quite fond of reading the books also. They are a really great fun way to learn about History but in a less conventional manner. Horrible Histories series 5 is however the first DVD we have watched in the series. In fact up until now we were not even aware that the series was also available in DVD and not just books.

We were all quite excited to settle down and watch the DVD however our excitement was short lived. Perhaps we expected to much. My 13 yr old got bored quickly and went off to find something else to do. My 14 yr old watched it all but moaned the whole time. He said it was quite silly and very amateur. I would tend to agree, however knowing the books as I do, I would assume this is purposely done and how it is meant to come across.

The acting is terrible and the content seems to jump around a bit from one topic to another quite randomly, BUT, again I think this is somewhat aimed at the way the books are set out also. Lots of info jammed onto the pages, here there and everywhere. Theres a lot of content and a lot to be learnt on the DVD but for me personally I much prefer the books. The extra features are a nice touch and we did like that but for now we will possibly just stick to the books. I would not personally buy the DVDs.

Reptiles and amphibians ruled the world for nearly 200 million years and today there are still over 14,000 of them. Some are huge, the deadliest creatures on earth.
