A Kiwi classic all year round... in Summer it's perfect at the beach or out bush, in Winter it's a tummy-warming treat with mashed spuds and minted peas... and don't forget the sauce!

Steak and cheese pies are a favourite amongst a lot of people in NZ. This one has both steak and cheese which is a good start and you might be thinking that's a strange statement but honestly how many times have you brought a steak and cheese pie to only find it either has no steak, no cheese or it might in fact be missing both. Oxford has the ratio correct in the steak to cheese filling and the steak was pretty good, you could tell this was a premium pie as you could actually chew and swallow the steak and it really did feel and taste like steak, not something that shouldn't be in a pie.
As always the pastry was great and to really do it justice you really need to heat the pie in the oven to get it just right. You get a well cooked pie, with a great pastry and the combinations of flavours work really well for this pie, my mouth was happy. I seriously don't think you would be disappointed in this pie if you were a steak and cheese fan. Try one if you get a chance.
For more years than I care to admit to, I have been a Steak 'n' Cheese Pie fan. I can not even begin to count how many different S'n'C Pie recipes I have come across in my travels across 18 countries. If I see a Steak'n'Cheese pie on sale, and it's one I haven't tried before... I'll give it a shot. So... this was the one pie variety I was most keen to try. And I am glad I did. Using this pie in a family dinner was risky, because if it didn't live up to it's hype I was going to disappoint 3 other people. (We had four different pies, and everyone got a quarter of each pie.)
Pea Pie Pud Plus is one of the all-time favourite dishes in my family. And I sure know about it if it's a botched meal, let me tell you! It's easy to tell if I have picked the wrong pie... there's leftovers! I have the rest of the components down pat - creamy mustard mashed spud, garlic carrots, steamed minted peas (or mixed veges with a garlic butter sauce if the mood strike us) - so the only thing I have no control over is the pie component... but I know now that if in doubt, I can dive into the freezer and use some of these... which, after this, I plan to keep a good stock of!
For a start, I knew as soon as I cut the pie up, that this was a quality pie... it had CHUNKS of steak! Not "steak mince" of "gristle and fat lumps that may or may not have come from near actual meat" the way budget pies have... I mean chunks of tender steak that, even after being microwaved, were tender enough to bite through without any significan't resistance. There was cheese on top that was gooey and ran down over the filling ensuring that every bite had the full flavour, and the pastry was amazing, considering it had gone through the nuke-box.
Overall, this was a hit with the entire family, even 5yr old My Fussy who normally avoid "real food" like it's toxic, preferring junk meat like luncheon or saveloys instead. For me, this was a seriously great pie. For a pie that is bulk-batched to have this level of quality at this price tag... rare indeed! I would have expected a pie like this to sell for $5.00 - and I dare say that if you were presented with this pie in a cafe you would pay nearly double the going retail price. This is a pie I plan to buy in bulk and keep a regular stock of in the freezer, budget allowing.
I really enjoy a steak and cheese pie. My husband is a bit down on them in general because often they are really just gravy and cheese pies, with some grisly pieces of non-descript meat in them. But I like the casserole feel of a good steak and cheese pie. This was the last pie I tried out of all the Oxford pie range.
I cooked this up for my lunch one afternoon while I was working from home. I was looking forward to the pie because my appetite had finally properly returned. And this pie didn't disappoint me. This was the first pie in this range, where when I cut into the pastry the cheese oozed out. This automatically put the pie in front for me. If a pie says it has cheese, then I have to see that cheese. Otherwise I get disappointed.
The steak pieces were relatively tender. The gravy was tasty and the pastry had a good crunch to it and a buttery taste. Overall it was one of the best steak and cheese pies I have ever had. It really was the cheese that won me over. I will definitely be looking out for this one in the pie warmer next time I'm in the dairy.
I don't really like Steak and Cheese pies, I often don't like the taste of the gravy and I'm not a big steak fan, but since I got this to review a taste of it, at least, was required.
This is your standard sized pie so it makes for a good serving for lunch. My husband and I split this pie in half, but after a couple of bites it confirmed that I still don't like steak and cheese pies and so I gave the remaining part of my pie to my husband to finish off.
The sauce is nice and thick, the amount of meat is good. My husband said that he rather liked it and he would eat this again. He said it is one of the better pies that he has eaten, so there's one fan of this in our house.
While I may not eat this again any time soon my husband will quite gladly.
This pie was very nice, I remembered this flavour of pie to be on of my second-favourites, but I was proven wrong. This pie had more solid fillings, the chunks of steak and the gooey cheese made a rather pleasant contrast, whereas the Mince and Cheese pies were a lot less solid. With the steak being in chunks, it meant that whenever I got to a chunk, it meant that as I chewed it, the flavour was drawn out more; but with mince, it doesn't need much chewing, so there is less flavour.
I don't know whether the reason I now like steak and cheese pies is because of the way this brand has done it, or whether it's just a change of taste; but what I do know for sure is, this pie was delicious! I did notice, though, that after heating this pie from frozen, the pastry on top got a bit flaky, but thankfully it wasn't a problem. Compared to the other Steak and Cheese pies I've had, this one wasn't that different, but still, at least I know that Oxford's don't make bad pies, far from it!
I am glad that I am now a big fan of steak and cheese pies, because the taste is great, and this would go well with some mixed veges and mash, so, yay! The fillings were awesome, I would still take some caution in eating this in a car, as there are still enough "gooey" fillings to possibly cause a mess. The pastry is awesome, it tastes good on it's own, and as I pointed out earlier in this review, the flaky lid wasn't an issue. I will be happy to eat this flavour of pie on a regular basis, so I'll be keeping an eye out for them, this brand especially!
I love a good steak and cheese pie and Oxford Pie's version is probably the best I have tried. Before I look a bite I peeled off the pastry top and saw there was cheese layer right across. This is different to other pies I have had where the cheese is all down one end. With Oxford's could enjoy the delicious cheese flavour in every bite.
There was lots of steak in the pie and it was so tender. The gravy was a lovely rich brown and there wasn't too much of it either. The combination of the meat, gravy and cheese was perfect for me. The size of the pie was also great. It filled me up without making me over full.
This is another great pie from Oxford pies although I think if I am going to pay for a premium pie I would probably get a variety that isn't available in the budget pies. If you are steak and cheese pies only person then you won't be disappointed.
