I really enjoyed Potato Music. It is a very heartfelt story about a family whom are surviving through war. The author; Christina Booth has a very gentle way of explaining the impact of war on this family.

When boots are marching past the house, the family of three decide to play the piano and dance to the music to keep out the sound of the screaming planes flying by.

The child in the story does not have a name, and her parents are just known as Ma and Pa.

Ma and Pa show their daughter that even in hard times there is one thing that cannot be taken away from you. Even when the piano is confiscated, they show their daughter that even without a piano they still have music around them and in their hearts.

I think this would be a very handy book for children to understand what war is.

I would definitely recommend this book.

Product image for My New Zealand Story: Lighthouse FamilyDuring World War Two, coastal New Zealand was on high alert due to threats of invasion. Imagine living on a lighthouse then...

For Frances and her family, living on a remote lighthouse station, World War Two is both far away and scarily close. There are rumours of submarines in the Pacific. The Japanese have attacked Pearl Harbor, taken Singapore and bombed Darwin... so what's to stop them invading New Zealand next?
