Review #11829 - Dated: 1st of July, 2014 Author: kymmage |
I'm quite gutted that I didn't pick up Weir Do the first book in this series when it came out last time. I saw it at a school book fair a couple of weeks ago and I nearly bought it there, but then I couldn't justify it in the groaning stack I had. Now I have read Weird Do 2, I am kicking myself some more.
This book is brilliant and funny. Even as a 35 *cough* year old woman, I had moments of rolling about laughing. The first thing that really draws you to the book is the cover. It has a hologram cover, so the pictures move as you move the cover from side to side. The best thing about it, is that the frog on the cover tries to catch Weir's eye. That had my daughter in hysterics.
The wordage in the book is quite light and we easily sat and read this over 30 minutes. It has something for everyone. For our family, the character's little brother really made us connect over our own little mischief toddler. Plus we have all had those awkward moments in class or around someone who is the 7th best looking. And who hasn't been in a store buying something pretty embarrassing (and usually not for yourself) only to walk into someone you know, right?!
The illustrations just make the story come alive. The words really are just there to string the pictures together and the whole print out of each page makes it seem a jumble of pictures and words. but I promise it does work well. I found it an easy read, even with the font changing up here and there. There are also some brilliant pieces of art in the book that got a LOT of laughs in our house. The mixed up animals and the folding page were brilliant.
I would say that this novel would be good for a reader who is not entirely new to reading, but who can read independently. It is in chapters so there is a natural pause here and there as well. $16.00 is good value in my opinion as this is one, I will not mind reading again and again.
