My daughter has already got a couple of the books in this series the Vampiresons, and the Aliensons and I was really keen to review this book as she loved the others. The cover page on all the books is very similar with the family portrait of the families but is really cool how they use the metallic designs so it is very eye catching. The pictures throughout the book are also great they are all coloured pictures and pages which makes it more fun to read. I hadn't read any of the other books so I wasn't sure what to expect but this was a really good read and easy reading too I got through the book in about 20 minutes so it is a good book for a quick read. My daughter also finished it quickly which she likes because although she can read a lot heavier books she enjoys reading easier books from time to time. The font was made easy to read too in large letters and some interesting font styles. The story follows the Werewolfsons who live on Freak Street, they are just an ordinary family despite being werewolfs they don't go around eating people or anything but they do howl at the moon. It is quite a funny little story with a mystery of a missing comb and some pesky fleas at a pet show. The young character in the story solves the mystery and saves the day which I always like as I feel it shows children that even the youngest people can save the day. |

Freak Street is a set of books following a set of neighbours all living on the same street. They are fairly recognisable character types, where all their surnames are 'what they are' followed by "-son". The first book we read in the series was the Vampiresons one. This is about the Werewolfsons. The front cover of these books always catches my eye. The black with silvery font is cool, and the full colour family portrait is a nice touch. The books seem to say family-friendly horror. And that is pretty much what these are, the Vampires are fruitarians and the Werewolves have a pet lamb. There is no blood and gore, just a mystery to solve. Even the baddies always seem to make better choices once caught. The story is often a little more complex than your classic first novel readers, because they always have a plot and sub-plot. These usually do link back in together, but its more complex than books for 5 and 6 years seems to be. Still my daughter really enjoyed the book and we read the whole thing in one sitting together. The pages are very vibrant and colourful. Every page is in full colour with hardly any white at all. This was fine as long as I had good lighting, but one or two times the page was a deep blue with black writing and I could hardly see what it said. This was a little frustrating. Otherwise a pretty good read and one I can see I'll be asked to read again. |
