Louise Nicholas: My Story product reviews

Proud to promote NZ productsThe hard-hitting and moving expose of a teenager whose abuse by police began when she was a 13-year-old and continued throughout her teens.

What's the real story behind Louise Nicholas' claims of gang rape by policemen?

What allowed her to bring her darkest and most harrowing secrets into the harsh light of public opinion?

Louise Nicholas' life has turned full circle since she was raped by policemen nearly 30 years ago - she now advises senior police how to support rape victims. She single-handedly rocked New Zealand's police and justice systems to their cores, her case sparking the 2007 Commission of Inquiry into Police Conduct. Police accepted the Commission's findings in full, apologised unreservedly to victims, and embarked on a programme of systematic change.

Wow, this was one book that the second I picked it was hard to put down again. In fact I managed to finish the book within a couple of days after a couple of very late nights reading!

I'm sure most of us know about the Louise Nicholas trial where New Zealand Police were thrown into the limelight after facing rape charges. It was a trial and a story which at the time divided people. There were those that believed Louise and those who thought everything she said was a lie. Being able to read her story, rather than just what the media wrote led to one very heart breaking and compelling read.

Louise not only gets to tell her story of the past but also her story of the trial and the 7 years following the trial. Though the results of the trial was not what they wanted she has overcome all of that and everything that has happened and focused on helping others going through the same.
The three cops may of walked free but Louise's story launched inquiries that have helped make changes to the way rape victims are treated. She really is a wonderful inspiring woman who with the help of Journalist Phillip Kitchin faced her past head on bringing it all to light.

The book is such and easy read and while it will make you cry when she goes into details of the past these heart breaking parts are needed for you to understand Louise and her story. For someone to go through so much and then come so far is truly amazing. I enjoyed her story so much I'm passing the book on to my mum to read and have others already asking if they can read it next. I recommend it to anyone who followed the story at the time.
